Fall is in full swing and, of course, that means it’s time to pick apples! Apple picking is one of our families favorites, not just because it’s a fun way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon, but because New Jersey produces truly delicious apples that our kids go wild for. Gala, Honeycrisp and Macintosh are our favorites, but we sometimes bring home Rome, Fuji and Golden Delicious too. Most orchards produce many varieties, so make sure you try them all, you might be surprised which you like the most. Our other fall favorite is picking pumpkins, but today let’s talk apple farms! Read on for family friendly apple orchards in your part of New Jersey.

Wightman Farms

Wightman Farms runs a Fall Festival on the weekends. The cost would be a bit high if you only want to pick apples, but if you are looking for a longer day with lots of kid friendly stuff to do, this farm fits the bill. Any apples you pick cost $3.29 per pound. Admission includes entry to Mazeland, hayrides, apple picking and use of the picnic area. They also have a pumpkin slingshot for the older kids or Dad.

Sun High Orchards

About a hour from New York City, Sun High Orchards is all about the picking, entry is inexpensive at $2 or $4 dollars and pay by the pound for what you pick. There is also a farm store open with fresh cider, ice cream, baked goods, soups and pastries. This farm also sells firewood if your brave enough for a little cool season camping.

Riamede Farm

Also an hour from New York City, Riamede Farm claims to be New Jersey’s oldest pick your own apple orchard. With trees dating back to the 1970s, it just might be true! This farms also grows other produce, so some may be available depending on where you go. Pay for the apples you pick at $2.89 per pound. Their website also claims “We are well-known for having the best fresh-baked cider donuts in the area”. You might want to try them!

Melick's Town Farm - Califon Orchards

Melick’s Town Farm has several locations and claims the title of largest apple orchards in New Jersey. Their Califon orchards grow a dwarf variety of apple trees, making the apples easy to reach for the kids and easy on your back! Apples are $1.99 per pound, but Honeycrisps (yum) are a bit more at $2.39 per pound. They have farm animals, a corn maze and a tractor tire playground for the little ones. Picnic tables are available for a family lunch. They also have, my favorite, fresh apple cider! You should try it before the season ends.

Battle View Orchard

Battle View Orchard is free to enter! Just pay for what you pick. Apples are $1.89 per pound, and this farm also has pumpkin’s available for $0.79 per pound. Please note this farm is cash only and first come first served, no reservations available. The farm updates info daily on their facebook page, so make sure you check before loading the kids in the car!

Eastmont Orchards

This farm grows a huge variety of apples, so put this on your list if you want variety. They encourage you to bring your own bag, but also sell reusable totes for $2 a piece. Apples are $2.29 per pound. Hayrides are available on weekends only for an extra $5 fee. Their facebook page is the best bet for up to date info.

Tickets are only available at the farm except for special events, and the farm encourages you to bring your own bag. Apples cost $2.29 per pound.

Russo's Fruit & Vegetable Farm

Russo’s Farm offers one of the best farm stands in South Jersey, and offers much more than pick your own apples throughout the growing season. Enjoy picking pumpkins and apples together at this large and relaxed farm, perfect for a day out with the kids. Open in the fall Friday - Sunday 9AM-5PM. Wagon rides to the fields cost $6.00 (children under 2 free) and includes the corn maze. Pumpkins are $0.69 per pound and apples are $1.99 per pound for whatever you pick. If you visit, make sure to leave a little extra time to check out the farm stand, and if you get there in the morning, the apple cider doughnuts are made right there on site.

Hill Creek Farms

Get ready to pick a whole lot of apples! This farm charges admission by the car load, and many days are free, so check the website before you go. Tickets are also $5 cheaper when purchased ahead. They recommend you purchase a U-Pick bag that comes in large $37.50, roughly 22 pounds, and medium for$27.50, roughly 13 pounds. With the U-Pick bag you can skip checkout on the way out, but you can also pick by the pound for $2.25.
